Physical child abuse involves agression or injury purposefully directed at a child. This can result in broken bones, bruises, and cuts, but not always. This is the most common type of abuse and the one that is most easily identified. Ongoing phsyical abuse can lead to severe psychological and behavioral issues. In fact, 84% of all prison inmates were abused as children.
Emotional child abuse involves attacking the mental state of a child. Parents and caregivers aren't perfect, but emotional abuse is constantly saying "You'll never be good enough" or acting negletful in a way that make them feel inadequate. Children need love and support to grow into mature adults, but emotional abuse can haunt a child well into adulthood by creating metal disorders. Additionally, this type of abuse interferes with relationships. Kids don't know how to feel or express their emotions in a "normal" way.
Sexual abuse involves an adult's deliberate exposure of a child to sexual activity. Unfortunately, these acts are commited by people the child trusts, so it goes unnoticed for a longer time. There are bad people who are in a place of trust: your mom or dad, teacher, or your best friend's dad. All over the world, 2 out of every 10 girls, and 1 out of every 10 boys have been sexually abused as children.
There are many causes for child abuse. It is important that people become aware and fight to break the cycle. Once a child is abused, they are 40% more likely to become an abuser!
